This 102-hour course will prepare individuals for careers as Sterile Processing Technicians. A Sterile Processing Technician is an individual who cleans and sterilizes used surgical instruments and other medical supplies, so that they can be safely redistributed and reused on patients. Employment opportunities for Sterile Processing Technicians may be found in surgery centers and central sterile processing departments of healthcare facilities. Students who successfully complete this program will be eligible to sit for the Sterile Processing and Distribution (SPD) Technician certification examination of the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD). This certification is the introductory certification for Sterile Processing staff within a healthcare organization, and is the minimum requirement for any state and/or facility that requires Sterile Processing Technicians to be certified. Note: Students who successfully complete the course and earn the SPD Technician certification will be guaranteed admission into the college’s Surgical Technology program, once all pre-requisite courses are satisfied.
