Phlebotomy
Phlebotomy Technician Program
The Phlebotomy Technician Program at Jacobs Medical Academy prepares students for entry-level employment as phlebotomy technicians. Students receive instruction and practical training in the essential knowledge and skills required to safely and professionally perform phlebotomy-related duties.
PROGRAM OPTIONS
• 5-Day Accelerated In-Person Option: Students attend class Monday through Friday for five consecutive days.
• Standard 8-Week In-Person Option: Students attend class once per week on Tuesdays for eight weeks.
• Standard 8-Week Fully Online + Externship Option: Students complete the instructional and coursework portion of the program online and complete a required hands-on externship.
ONLINE STUDENT FLEXIBILITY
Students enrolled in the fully online option have the flexibility to work ahead in their coursework and complete assignments earlier than the scheduled due dates. Students are not required to wait until the scheduled week to complete available assignments.
Students who successfully complete their online coursework ahead of schedule may complete the academic portion of the program sooner. The required externship must still be successfully completed before the student is considered to have completed the entire program.
ONLINE EXTERNSHIP REQUIREMENT
Students enrolled in the fully online option are required to complete a 20-hour externship and must begin their externship during Week 4 of the standard 8-week program.
Students are responsible for securing their own approved externship site. Jacobs Medical Academy will provide the required externship documents for students to present to potential externship locations.
The externship provides students with practical, hands-on experience performing phlebotomy-related skills in an appropriate setting.
PROGRAM CURRICULUM
The curriculum includes blood collection procedures, venipuncture and capillary collection concepts, patient identification and preparation, infection control, safety procedures, specimen handling and processing, professionalism, and other essential phlebotomy technician skills.
PROGRAM COMPLETION
Students must successfully complete all required coursework, practical requirements, and applicable externship requirements to successfully complete the Phlebotomy Technician Program.
Upon successful completion, students will have completed training designed to prepare them for entry-level phlebotomy employment and the applicable national certification examination.
